Thanks. Buoyed up by Norman's reassurance I've just tried downloading
jqt-win-x86.zip
Avast proudly came up with its red window, though I haven't managed to
screen-capture it.
I've submitted a false-positive report to Avast support, mentioning
Eric, Chris and Norman as developers and sources of information in case
they need to follow up. I hope they don't bother you too much.

I have had Avast false positives so there isn't necessarily a problem.
But better safe than sorry.
Google on evo-gen and whatever else it had to say might be interesting.
