Bill,
I trashed my installation of beta j64-801, logged in as my granddaughter
Hannah, downloaded the beta version, unzipped it, dragged it to the
/Applications folder. At that point, the system responded with a dialog
box saying that I would have to supply an Admin user id and password. I
did that and it happily installed the package.
The symbolic link that is in (system wide of course) /usr/local/bin
started j just fine. I did
install 'all'
and it happily did that too. I logged out and back in as myself -
running j8 worked fine but the "expand bug" was still there. So, I
looked at the files in /Applications and they all had owner.group as
hannah.staff - using vi to edit stdlib.ijs needed to be run under sudo
so that I could save the file that didn't belong to me (no surprises there).
Likewise, when (logged in as my Admin self) I got the following slap on
the wrist -
install 'all'
Unable to run Package Manager, as you do not have access to the
installation folder.
So pacman should be run by the person who did the installation. Things
like this in a multi-user system are sometimes confusing, but the rules
are reasonably simple and clear. I suppose some kind of Admin
authorization dialog would be "nice", but maybe it is just as easy to
keep updates etc. restricted to the Admin user. Mostly a local
administrative policy issue....
I think the installation can be very nice and would be improved by using
.dmg for the download and having an alias of /Applications right in the
window of the mounted file disk image. Makes the installation very
intuitive (especially for a Mac user :-)
Now I have to find the motivation to test some of the new stuff you are
including in this beta!

The "expand bug" was still there, so I tried to use vi

Are there any environment variables or other means to detect jconsole

Can a normal use pacman? I think there may not be any prompt for password?
