The actual impetus for me to work on this was that there was no indication (that I could find) to tell a new user that the Addons are something really important. Our new-user guides say 'run the labs' but you can't run the labs unless you load the addons.

What is "installation"? To me, and I expect to most users, it's what you have to do before you can use the system like you want to. With J, there are 3 parts: core (required), addons (optional, but some at least are required for serious work), Qt IDE (optional, but strongly recommended for people getting started on J).

The Installation page previously covered the core; not exclusively, because it mentioned Qt IDE. Addons were not mentioned. We need to think of this as "Core Installation" rather than "Installation". It used to be all that Installation meant, but the system has moved on.

How about this layout:

The Installation page (the one I have been working on) will be split in two, with the section "Install the J System" and everything starting with "Folders" moving to a new page CoreInstallation. Thus, Installation becomes what Chris called the Quick Start page and will be the one seen by users new to J. It will point to CoreInstallation for the details.

The Mac issue was a sideshow, but my not understanding it was getting in the way of making the docs friendlier. But Raul has fixed that now.

I want to revert to separate pages for the base and for the Qt

As Bill points out, it is the case that Qt is optional. That your users
need it should not complicate the installation for others.

By all means steer the novice as you think appropriate, but this should not
affect the base installation page. A simple statement on that page can
direct them to the Qt IDE page.

I am surprised that all this is apparently caused by your students having
difficulties with the Mac. This makes it more appropriate that we have a
"Quick Start" page that gives the few instructions needed to install
J+Qt+Addons for those who just want everything in the default location.
This page can have sections for each platform.

I don't want to suggest that jconsole is only suitable for embedded
systems, & I have changed that language.

But I do feel strongly that we should point new users towards Qt IDE. That
system has so much more support for tutorials, training, debugging, and
script development that I can't imagine that a user new to J wouldn't want
to start with it.

I am trying to have this page tell everyone how to install J as they wish,
but steer the novice towards JQt + all the addons.

I think your instructions are still biased to Qt IDE, eg suggesting new
users to install Qt IDE. Jconsole is described as suitable for automated
task and embedded systems, but this is not true. FWIE I use jconsole as
the
primary development platform. Choosing which jfe is just a matter of
personal preference, eg some users favor Qt ide and quite reluctant to use
jhs, while some other users are just the opposite.

I have tried to respond to the suggestions given here by adding text
explaining things and adding a section focused on new users. There are
errors and omissions that need to be fixed by someone who knows the
answers:

1. Android is not listed under the supported platforms

2. There is a note in the installation page saying that jconsole is
renamed to ijconsole; this conflicts with the info under 'What Is
Installed' and later references to jconsole.

3. Someone who knows how to install on:
Mac
Linux
Android
Raspberry Pi

needs to go into the 'If You Are New to J' section and list the steps for
those platforms. There is a lot of information under 'OS-specific
Information' but you'd have to be a geek to make sense of it. We need
some
simple instructions for ordinary users, especially Mac users.
