Unfortunately, I don't have access to any big endian machines so
that I have no idea of segfault.  I can only comment on the
unicode failures.

perhaps the test is wrong, try
  (f 6&u: x) = f x

please confirm whether 5&u:(10&u:'5') and 1&u:(10&u:'5') 
can give '5' without domain error.
