It looks like this is a stack overflow. I have put in a check to detect
it, for the next release.
The arguments are surprising:

I don't understand why rank would ever get into a loop. The code for
sparse matrices is very complex, and I will not look more deeply unless
you get a stack error on an argument that should work.
