The "most portable" character example at the top of
the page looks bad in the two browsers I am using, Safari
and Firefox. In both cases question marks appear where the
pipe character should be. In the text part of the page, the
pipe character prints fine, though. In the case of Safari,
the question mark is embedded in a black diamond. Also the
plus sign pointed at in the following boxed image is
similarly a question mark.
