I tested on thunderbird 1.5 again. During composing a email, I pressed the
contacts button on toolbar to open a contact pane on the left. I wrote something
on the message pane then move moused pointer to hover over the contact pane and
wheel scrolled its contents. With the mouse pointer still hover on the left
pane, I typed something on the keyboard, and it appeared on the message pane. So
it seems keyboard focus was still on the message pane even mouse wheel scrolling
the other pane.

If mouse wheel requires focus in the low-level api, then thunderbird might do
some clever workaround.
