Doing it until it works and then clicking "do not show again" is not a
very satisfactory workaround. Is it true that once you kill the welcome
screen that you don't see the problem again and can run all the demos?
The very short java error is strange. Usually there is a page of
information with a few hidden hints.
I'd guess at some kind of Java race condition. Its use of pseudo
multi-threading can sometimes get confused.
Anything special about the hardware? Dual processor or whatever?
When you say 504 works every time I assume that you are running it so as
to get the weclome splash screen as that seems to be the trigger.
Unless I get reports from other systems failing or more tidbits I'm not
sure what to do about this.

Presumably there is more info about the java error after the
IllegalArgumentException line. Please report all that output. The
java program has crashed and that explains your symptoms. The
important question is why.
There is no more, I'm sorry. Have tried again, the java diagnostic is
exactly as I showed it. "java.lang ..... declaring class" and that's
all.
If you try it 20 times does it sometimes work?
Yes it does by golly! It worked 4 times, failed 16 times. The sequence
of
events was:
fail fail fail succeed, 11 more fails, succeed fail succeed succeed
fail.
Also, in another username, I managed to get it going after a few
attempts, and clicked "do not show this message again" in the "Welcome
to J window". After that
there was no more trouble.
In your experiences with the t beta is it possible that in trying
different users you were trying java versions 1.5 and 1.4 with the
1.5s failing and the 1.4s working?
No. It was java 1.5 always
Could you try J504 in the same environment? If j601 fails as you
describe and j504 works then it is most likely a J problem. But if
both j504 and j601 fail in a similar manner then it is possible that
the java install is damaged.
Have done this. J504/jw worked first time every time in exactly the
same environment as j601.

I'm having trouble with installing the v beta for linux32,
and would appreciate any advice.
Jconsole works just fine (so I conclude I've followed the
installation instructions correctly).
However, if I start jw, I see the two new windows, "welcome to J"
and 1.ijx
In 1.ijx there is a flashing cursor, but neither window will respond
to any mouseclick inside them, or keystroke. The windows can be
selected moved, resized closed etc in the usual way
In the shell window, j601/jw gives java.lang RunTime Exception:
java.lang IllegalArgumentException: objectis not an instance of
declaring class.
and which java gives
/usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/bin/java
and java -version gives
java version "1.5.0_06" ....
I had the same problem with the t beta, except that in the end
I did get a successful install of t beta by trying the install
in several different usernames on different systems. Sometomes it
worked, sometomes not.
In all cases I had the same Linux (Mandriva 2006)
Is there anything I can do to gather more information?
Many thanks
