I have all this working now as you describe. There are a few rough edges that need sorting. E.g., it would be nice to provide jbreak.app and jconsole.app so that there are nice icons for them that can be used just like everything else. Your idea of alias right in the dmg is interesting and I will play with that as well.

I had decided to just let profile put jsoftware/j602/user and temp in the home directory. Do your really think it necessary to put them in home/documents? I've played with a few other apps and it seems to me that most put stuff into their own folder in home rather than in documents, but my experience is very limited. The tiny advantage to me is that putting jsoftware/j602 in home would likely become the standard across most platforms, whereas docuements would require a test on uname for Darwin in profile.ijs.

Great, I think that will be a boon for Mac users.

I just built a .dmg of j602 and it is quite lovely that
it mounts as a file system and everything seems to work
just fine. I will experiment some with dropping the j602
folder into Applications with the multi-user things in
profile.ijs filled in and see if it looks like a normal
application to multiple users. I will put the jsoftware
folder into Documents for the user's temp etc. directories,
without them J.app from the j602 folder dropped into system
Applications doesn't run because it gets permission errors.

I'll fool with this some more, it looks like it should
be easy to get it working.

While it is very simple to just drag the folder j602 out
of the mounted jsoftware.dmg file system to Applications,
it is even more convenient to include an alias for the
Applications folder - then the installation is simply
to drag j602 into the other folder in the same mounted
file system.

All of this new stuff is a giant leap forward in ease of
installation for Darwin and Linux.

Again - Thanks!

I have been looking at Mac dmg and app and it is more straightforward than I thought. Right now my guess is that the next Mac beta will be packaged as an app in a dmg.
