As I've mentioned before, since I mainly use jconsole (actually, jee), I'm in favor of the change to a browser front-end for two reasons: 1) I don't use the session manager very much, so I have little committment to it, and 2) a browser front-end opens up possibilities for using J on arbitrary machines and 3) for re-orienting the interface to be web-based which is how things seem to be moving in general.
On this last point, it would be great to able to use all the web-based tools rather than re-inventing them - like this: http://www.danvk.org/dygraphs/. This also got me to thinking about why I use the session manager at all - basically, it's because of the easy access to the items on the menu bar, things like package manager, the demos and labs, documentation, and configuration settings. I haven't bothered to figure out how to work with these from within the console, mostly because I know where things are on the menu bar. The one exception is some configuration settings, but even there it's often handier to make the change with the GUI, then pull the results out of the config file. So, if we get away from the existing session manager, it would be nice to spin off that menu bar functionality, mostly, in my mind, because it's one of the places in J where it's easy to find things. -- Devon McCormick, CFA ^me^ at acm. org is my preferred e-mail ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For information about J forums see http://www.jsoftware.com/forums.htm
