I just noted these lines in the jijx session after returning from
the jdemo5 window:

*** response not sent for ~temp/svg/plot.pdf

The mix of svg and pdf in the path above looks a bit suspicious to me.
Perhaps that explains why the plot demo clears the plot area blanks
after hitting the "pdf" button? It's difficult to tell because I
don't have a clue what's SUPPOSED to happen.
