I suspect this a system font problem.
The CSS font-family setting in JHS is currently set as:
Courier new, courier, monospace

Assuming your system doesn't have "courier new" or courier it will default to 
the font specified for use as monospace. You should be able to change this 
setting in your browser to see if there are other fonts on your system that 
work better. 

Altering the current JHS CSS font-family setting to add another alternative 
font before "monospace" might be worthwhile if this affects enough users and 
there is a common font on these systems that does work ok.

I can confirm that the jbd definition appears to be out-of-date with the latest 
base system. BOXES_j_ is now called Boxes_j_.
