I have installed IE8 and see the div space problem you report as well as several others. I'll try to sort these out late next week. We've reached the point where the differences between different IE versions are greater than their differences from FF eta al.
That said, I installed IE8 as a step towards IE9 which looks very interesting. canvas support will finally be fast and everywhere and this means great, fast vector graphics with javascript in the browser.
