When installing a new (beta) executable (under Windows)... - must one first uninstall the old (beta) first? - is it desirable to first uninstall the old one first? - does it not matter whether to first uninstall the old one first? - if you don't have to uninstall the old one first, can one then just install over that one, in the same directory? - or does the installer take care of all that for you -- either automatically uninstalling the old one or giving you the option of uninstalling the old one?
And did I miss something, or are the answers to that not documented? If it's not documented, why not? Are users supposed to believe that the authors of this program don't ever expect anybody to upgrade to a new version? (You may be able to tell from the tone of these questions -- which are meant quite seriously nonetheless -- that this is a pet peeve of mine. I have the same complaint about too much software. On the other hand, there is lots of software that tells you up front (e.g., on the download site, on in a readme.txt file that is part of a .zip download including the executables) what the situation is with respect to such question. -- Murray Eisenberg [email protected] Mathematics & Statistics Dept.
