In my opinion, "right" is simple.

If I understand Erik's goal, it is to have an environment where
fancier editors can be implemented in J, and distributed as
addons.

That said, I do not know if it will initially be possible to implement an
ide which has a "feature database" where the user can configure
the behavior of the editor by selectively choosing implementations
for each of a variety of features and binding them to keys or
menu items or whatever else...
