I just discovered that my first recollection was wrong. It seems my fingers know what I am doing better that I can describe it.
I use Ctrl-Click for discontinuous selection, not Alt-click. So, Alt-click could also be used for FIF. For me, Ctrl-click is fine for Win FIF. I'm not sure I see a reason to prefer either Ctrl-click or Alt-click. The MAC usage will likely be different than the Win usage anyway, just because the MAC fn, control, command and option keys seem to be used on the MAC in ways that are often not directly translatable to Windows. And, the Start, Applications, Cntl and Alt keys are used in Windows in similar, not always easily translatable ways. I found several contradictory tables on the Web for mapping Mac keyboards to Win keyboards. None of them seemed complete to me and none seemed significantly better than the others. So, it looks like app developers are somewhat on their own to define key and mouse usage for the Win and Mac environments, once you get beyond what is recommended in the Windows and Mac style guides.
