I'm not sure my response will help or not but I am happily running SlimServer on a Mac Mini running OS X with all latest updates applied. My library only has c 3,500 songs so we're not directly comparable but I am finding the Squeezebox adequately responsive. My Mac is only running at 1.4 GHz and has 512MB RAM installed so it's hardly a powerhouse!
