yes, agreed, there are mixed messages: 'beta' implies a stable tested
release, whereas 'nightly build' is a good warning to expect anything
(or nothing)

maybe use 'alpha' for anything which is on a nightly build and reserve
'beta' for versions that have been frozen for extended testing? 

people using squeezeboxes are quite likely to want the latest and will
be tempted to try a beta (without reading the warnings of course...).
giving them code which might not even run is bad for slimserver's
longterm image
