I've always done exactly what you're doing using the task manager. Except that I'm using Process Explorer(procexp.exe) from www.sysinternals.com. It minimizes nicely to a systray icon which displays a real-time graph of cpu usage. A simple glace down at the lower right corner of my screen tells me if a library scan is finished or not.
