So, basically, if you use iTunes and you've let iTunes order your music
by Artist->Album->Track(s), like me, you're screwed?

You aren't screwed, but I would recommend not doing that anymore.

The problem with letting iTunes handle your music like that (which I
postulate is broken), is how does one handle the 'Greatest Hits' problem.

It comes down to - How do you know when to "create" a new album based on a
single piece of criteria? If you choose the Artist (and what if there are
multiple artists per track), how do you deal with compilation albums where
there is a different artist per track? If you choose the base directory, what
if you have the directory structure you describe above? What about multidisc
albums? What about albums with a compilation bit?

You can't just go by title and artist, or else you end up like iTunes, and
all my 'Greatest Hits' albums are lumped under one album (in the case of
browsing "All"). iTunes and other 3-pane type browsers eliminate the problem
mostly, because the hierarchy is there by default. Yes, you can look at
'All', but then you have the problems I describe. They've choosen to go with
the lowest common denominator, and not worry about the edge cases.

If you choose more than one, then you have conflicts. Don't even think about
making this a user option, because it's too compilcated and our Support staff
will be overwhelmed.

Like I said - everyone wants it a different way. We've tried to be as
flexible as possible, while still being as correct as possible.

This never used to be the case, so what changed?

It has always been the case, afaik.

And as always, Patches Welcome.
