I use square brackets in pretty much the same way.

A Night At The Opera [MFSL]
Soultrane [MFSL]
Made in Japan [DCC]

But I can search on 'mfsl' or 'dcc' and it finds the albums just fine. 
SlimServer's treatment of punctuation is a little selective, but it
shouldn't cause the problem you're seeing.
