If you look through the bug report at comment #4, one odd thing was that when the Squeezeboxes didn't connect, the Softsqueeze client never appeared in the logs. If restarting SlimServer is a workaround for you (even if only on 1/10th of the tries) then I think there's a good chance that you're experiencing the same problem.
