Well, I finally figured out what was causing me so much trouble. At the same time as making new playlists I had also ripped a new CD which was a collection of classical pieces. I didn't check the tags before I included the tracks in one of the playlists ran a rescan.
Turns out the tracks all had file names made up of the full details of the pieces of music including composer, work, movement, opus number, etc, including many accented characters, and that none of this info had gone into the tags which were blank. The problem then was that I could not get SS to stay up for long enough to initiate a rescan so had to delete the /var/cache/slimserver/MySQL folder. Removing the suspect album from the music directory before this did the trick. I then had to do dome serious renaming and tagging before I could move it back. I am assuming that it was the accented characters in the file names which caused the trouble but as some of the file names were about 50 characters long I also wonder if this might also have been the cause.
