Just a couple (untested) ideas:
1) Have you tried setting COMPILATION=0? That might straighten 'Various
Artist' issues out, at least until there's a proper fix.
2) Are you using MusicMagic/MusicIP? ('Bug 3824'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3824) may be related. The
MusicMagic scan drops entries from the contributor_album table.)
