Not sure what's going wrong for you... I'm using a not-quite-latest 6.5.1 and going from a genre to a list of artists in the web interface takes a maximum of 4 secs for me (thats for the "biggest" genre).
Going from 5 to 6.5 is a fairly major change, though, lots of things are different. First - are you sure you've let the scan complete before trying this out? Have you loaded any plugins at all? What OS, what spec of machine?
