You seem pretty knowledgeable, so I think it would be helpful to me and
others (maybe the developers) if you spelled out exactly how you think
slimserver intended to treat album artist (or albumartist). I expected
certain behavior for compilation albums (compilation = 1) and am not
getting it. You expect certain behavior when compilation = 0.

Clarification on how the albumartist tag should be created for the
various tag types would also be helpful. (TPE2 for id3 tags???,
albumartist or album artist for flac, ….???) My personal interest is
in flac tags.

When compilation = 0 and when an album has tracks with more than one
artist, you seem to expect slimserver to automatically list the album
under the albumartist. Do you expect the album also to be listed under
all the artists appearing in the artist tags? How about when
compilation = 1? (I would like there to be an option to list the album
under only the albumartist.)

How about when compilation = 0, all artist tags for an album include
only one artist, but the artists aren’t the same for all tracks?

There are lots of cases to consider.

The responses to my post
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34490) indicates there
is lots of disagreement/confusion about how slimserver should
incorporate albumartist into its listings, and how those listings are
(should be) affected by the slimserver behavior settings.

All of this concerns how slimserver intended to treat albumartist as
opposed to how it actually treats albumartist (i.e., bugs). I will now
mention an idea for how slimserver should be designed.

I am not a programmer, but my intuition suggests a very easy framework
for compilation albums (compilation = 1). In the behavior settings,
offer three options: (1) list album under each artist contributing to
the album, (2) list album under artist “xx” where xx is a fixed string
provided by the user (xx might be “various artists” or “various’ or ???)
, and (3) list under %xx% where %xx% is a tag name (the user could
specificy %albumartist%, but could also specify %band% or any other
tag).

Is this a naïve suggestion?

Thanks,
Randy
