The player was stopped, but the web page showing the 3 or 4 album-long
playlist it played during the day.

The slowness was all the time, until I reloaded the page (similar to
your observation). Wandering the mouse around the page even after
reloading the page uses a ton of CPU though, that doesn't feel healthy
to me!

FF does seem much better at this, though it does lag a little, and it
does also use a good dose of the CPU if I wander the mouse around the
page a bunch.

I must say the playlist drag and drop is sweet :)  Now it'd be nice if
you could drag from the browsing pane on the left over to the playlist
on the right... :) I imagine there's some frame issues with that idea
though.

I'll update in a while and try out your latest tweaks. It's no bother
for me to use FF. It's the rest of the household that concerns me!
