FF did the same as MSIE after a while, fwiw. Got slow, burned excessive watts of electricity in the CPU whenever the mouse passed overhead. Reloading the page made it get better, but it's hard to tell if it's as-good as from a fresh browser. I've just svn up'ed. Will leave both MSIE and FF twiddling their thumbs overnight and report on the morrow.
