It is far easier to develop plugins that use an SN web service as the  
backend.  If SN is down it will be unavailable but this goes for a  
lot of things such as RadioIO, Pandora, Rhapsody, MP3tunes, etc.  We  
don't anticipate any downtime, and we are rolling out redundant  
datacenters to make it even more reliable.

Why?  They used to have to use a (slow) Live365 web service in the  
US.  Also, SN will soon be served from Germany as well as East and  
West coast US.
