I've said that since the first versions. The outer background is a bit
gratuitous, and helps to make the interface busier than need be.

I don't mind the fade, but it would better serve as the page

There needs to be some sort of masthead, so the space used at the top
doesn't bother so much.  But you're right about the bottom.  That's a
lot of space to waste on just the Help and Settings buttons.

Those corners do no harm, but if most people can't see them, then they
should choose different colors.

As KDF pointed out, parts of the newest look are still a work in
progress, so this will likely change.
