You should be able to remove these obsolete versions from your 
add/remove list without too much difficulty.

I find that the best way to upgrade Softsqueeze is to go into the Java
control panel applet and delete the old version from Java's downloaded
applications list first.

Unfortunately SUN keeps re-arranging the location of this setting but
with the 1.6 JVM you'll find it under

Start->Settings(Control Panel)->Java

Once the Java control panel applet opens, go to 

General->Temporary Internet Files->View

After a bit of searching a dialog will appear. Select any old copies of
Softsqeeze and hit delete.

Then on the toolbar at the top of the dialog, switch from Show
Applications to Show Deleted Applications and remove Softsqueeze from
the deleted list.
