Also, from a simplistic/maintenance point of view, surely it's easier/less work to permanently display the search box and button, than have pop-up and hide functionality.
However, I think the original point that Michael was trying to make (somewhere, may not have been in this thread), was that there may be a misunderstanding about what the search box actually searches. From the home page, it obviously searches all music, but if you've already drilled down to a specific artist, would the user expect a search string to only match on songs by that artist? That would be my only concern, rather than whether the box was always displayed, because whether it pops up on demand or is permanently visible, there is not clue as to what it will be searching. Nb, it would be really good if it *did* take the browse page context into consideration for searching. It would do away with the need to visit advanced search as frequently, and would match how iTunes works.
