To install the latest stable release (SlimServer 7.0) update your
/etc/apt/sources.list to include:

deb http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main

To install the latest testing release (SqueezeCenter 7.0.1) update your
/etc/apt/sources.list to include:

deb http://debian.slimdevices.com testing main

If you want to install the development release (currently SqueezeCenter
7.0.1) update your /etc/apt/sources.list to include:

deb http://debian.slimdevices.com unstable main

Further information for all the smart people who have contributed to my
post. the above is copied from the debian installation instructions.
The latter part states that the dev release or unstable gives one
7.0.1. Well the build that I described as a mess was obtained using
adept which accesses these sources and you might recall that the screen
shot shows unstable producing 7.1. Am I getting closer to the issue?

Mike.
