The Xilinx is a programmable logic chip which handles much of the audio
decoding etc. It's software is included as part of the firmware image.
Usually when moving firmware forwards it should be reprogrammed as part
of the upgrade process, but when going backwards it isn't. Why it didn't
work in your case I can't say, but the "hold 1" reset will force it to
be reprogrammed from the current firmware.
