I'm running WinXP, SC Version: 7.3 - 24282. I have two SB1s plus a Boom
and a Duet.

This morning the alarm didn't go off on my bedside SB1, and the time was
stuck at 3:07 AM. The other SB1 showed the same thing; the Boom and
Duet had the right time. All are set to use my server as the music source.

When I hit a button on the SB1 remote, the "lost contact with
slimserver" message appeared. I restarted the SB1 and the display then
cycled endlessly around the "Slim Devices" splash screen, the Welcome
screen, and the "Can't find" screen.

I then tried to access the SqueezeCenter web interface (from another PC
rather than on the server itself), and couldn't connect. When I logged
on to the server the tray icon had the message "Starting SqueezeCenter".
It's set to "Automatically run at login"

I checked the uptime and found that the server had rebooted at about
3:07 AM; I'm assuming that yesterday's critical IE fix from Microsoft
got downloaded at 3AM, and this then forced a reboot. The login is
password protected, so the server would have been sitting at the login
screen until I accessed it this morning. And so SqueezeCenter would not
have been running until I logged in to check the problem. Manually
rebooting the server confirmed all of the above.

A quick search of the archives told me I needed to run
ServiceEnabler.exe and change the option from "Start SqueezeCenter when
I log in" to "Start SqueezeCenter automatically when the computer
starts", which fixed the reboot/login problem.

So two questions:

Why does the SB1 have this odd behavior when the server goes away?

Unless I missed it, shouldn't the two options for running as a service
come up somewhere in the SC installation/upgrade procedure?
