All artists contribute to music in some way (various roles). Some are the
primary performers on songs (artist role for normal albums), some are
bands/orchestras, conductors, composers, etc. Some albums are collections of
songs by various people, so the music can have an album artist role, and track
artist roles.

As there can be more than one contributor on a song, all contributors are held
in a link table.

Additional contributors could be added, but the tags aren't supported by SC's
scanner. eg. involved people (typically reports who the individual singer,
drummer, etc are), original artist, mix artist, producer, etc.

I'll have a quick look later.

I guess you are talking mp3 files, id3 tags then. Have you tried other file
types?

Maybe. I normally only use YEAR tags. I have compilation albums containing
songs with different years, and never had a problem. I believe there was a
problem with varying GENRE tag content for songs on an album (over 2 years
ago), but that's history.

Having said that, when I first started tagging, I entered specific release
dates instead of just years, and I don't recall seeing strange behaviour.
Things change over time though, as a few users wish for weird fringe cases like
that.

Sure, it just doesn't work for most other people if it were that way.

There should be no logic to make albums up from the content of playlists.
Playlists are not albums (except cue sheets, which do define albums).

Sure, you can make a playlist containing all the songs you want on a
compilation, and then you can find the playlist via Browse Playlists and play
it. But you can't tag song1 with ALBUM=X, song2 with ALBUM=Y, put them in a
playlist called Z and expect both songs to be on an album called Z.
