Ok, so I've upgaded ESET - and this have moved things along a bit, but
still no joy.  I now get a startup error: 

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Application ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
description; see Help and Support for details. The following
information is part of the event: Perl interpreter failed.

On googling the same, the first thread is one from Dean querying how to
trace this down for an SD customer and the second is this thread!

I still think this may be related to ESET - is there a perl process I
could specifically give permission to?
