I'm still having problems with a few files, but I don't think the cause is VBR/CBR - I have both kinds of files affected. I have tried retagging the files with ID3 2.4 only and 2.3 but no change.
I did manage to get one of the albums to show up - the two main things that I changed were to delete all the old replaygain tags and then change the format of the v2.4 tags from UTF16 to UTF8 but I also did a complete wipe of the tags and retagged with Picard. Am going to try this a stage at a time and work out what, if any of these, makes the difference.
