You can get the plugins issue resolved as follows: install your plugins and SC won't start. Navigate to the "Downloaded Plugins folder" (this is on a Windows Build but I assume will be the same on Linux) and you will see the plugins you tried to install but still in .zip form. This is why SC won't start.
Assuming you want to run SC with some plugins, unzip all of these folders and delete the zip files. Then move the unzipped folders from "Downloaded Plugins" to the "Plugins" directory under your SC installation directory. Then start SC. Should now start up ok with plugins active and working. My SC is scanning ok and has been for the last three or four nightlies, so sorry I can't help you there.
