Thank you Chris for taking the time to reply to my post.

Yes, I am holding the volume-up key in while inserting the battery, and
holding it there until my thumb gets sore, after 2-3 minutes... Nothing
happens, I never get the Free your music screen.

I've switched firmware once before using this method, so I have a good
idea how it's supposed to work.

I work with embedded sw myself, and to me it seems to be stuck at the
bootloader and not loading the os. 

The Controller never turns itself off either, it will probably keep
showing the Logitech logo until the battery runs out.

So what to do now? More things I can try? Is there a serial port or
something similiar on the unit that can give more info, or should I be
able to get it replaced under warranty even though it's more than 1
years old?
