Sorry to all you guys working so hard to get 7.4 up and running, but it looks like Apple has thrown in a bug or 'feature' into iTunes 9 that has changed how it's Sound Check (Apple's version of ReplayGain) works.
I think it sets (or used to set) a tag called iTunNORM which SC was able to read and everything was good. Now in iTunes 9 something has changed. Now iTunes shows that the Sound Check volume adjustment level has been set in its own info screens but this is not read by SC (ie in the Song info for these tracks in SC no volume adjustment is shown). This only affects new tracks added or ripped into iTunes 9. Existing tracks in the iTunes library are unaffected. This problem affects MP3 and Apple Lossless - not checked but I guess all other formats too. There is a work around, because the nice man who developed iVolume (which does a better job than Apple's built in Sound Check) noticed that whatever Apple changed screwed up his app too. He has now made a change to his app which seems to fix the files and allows SC to read the volume adjustment again (and allows the same reading to show up in both SC and iTunes). Anyway, thought you should know that without further help people who just use iTunes 9 won't get volume adjusted music anymore unless you can find a fix too... (or Apple fix something, but not sure if this is a bug or deliberate by them!) I am sure that the developer of iVolume will be able to help with what has changed in iTunes - I am guessing it has changed the iTunNorm tag somehow, but this is beyond me really. My system is 7.3.4 and OS X 10.5, but I'm guessing the change in iTunes applies across the board. Hope this helps. Best.
