Are you really talking about searching or are you talking about a
simple way to go to another letter/page in a long list ?

As I've understood some people has used Custom Browse plugin to get an
intermediate "letter level" in the artist and album browse menus. Maybe
your solution would solve that so it works good out of the box in large
libraries ?

If it's a real search function it should also be available in the
context menu. As I see it the context menu should show all actions
possible in the selected context, besides this there might be shortcuts
to some of the actions, like holding down middle button. However, I
think it's important that you know that you also can reach everything
from the context menu in case you don't remember what shortcut it was.

If it's just about to make it easier to navigate in long lists by
letting you select the page/letter then it's not really an action, it's
just part of the navigation controls. In that case, I think it would
work if it only was available by holding down middle button. However, in
that case I also think it should work in all long menu lists in the user
interface.
