i have no idea, how would i tell?  is there a utility that can show me
why the HD is cranking?  i've heard "process manager" mentioned i
think...

one thing i am going to try is to DL a newer 7.4.2b and reverse
moonbases tweaks just to eliminate that (or identify it) as a cause. 
just haven't had a chance to do it yet...
