There are several ways of getting round the problem, but it depends on
how you update kubuntu.

The best way to test the state of play is to install the 7.4.2 .deb. If
this works then you will be using 7.4.2 testing rather than the stable
software. I use that and I have no obvious problems. If the install
gives the message cannot install mysql-server 5.0 then you can try
installing mysql-server-5.1 which worked for me in kubuntu. You will
have synaptic to manage these things. If you have the rep in place then
you can install 7.4.2 by changing the version to testing rather than
stable. After updating using this method I would suggest changing the
rep back to stable.
