Are you working with FLAC files? In Mp3tag the simplest way is to use the 'Extended Tags' dialog. Select one or more tracks on the right-hand side (the 'File View') and then use Alt+T or the 'Pencil & Paper' icon. In the Extended Tags view hit the top button 'Add field...', enter COMPILATION for the field and 1 or 0 for the value. As you get to know Mp3tag you'll find that you can also add a new column in the File View for the COMPILATION field, or customize the Tag Panel (on the left) to add fields. Mp3tag forums: http://forums.mp3tag.de/ You should come to find that you don't need to use COMPILATION=0, except in rare cases. Adding an ALBUMARTIST tag to albums with guest artists is the best way to keep an album from being marked a compilation.
