There are three generations of HP MediaSmart Servers that have been
released to date; EX470/5, EX485/7 & EX490/5

The only difference between the EX47x and EX48x series is the number of
disks. The lower numbered model has one hard drive and the higher
numbered model has two hard drives. The difference between the EX490
and the EX495 is the processor speed and the size of the single hard
drive that they both have.

All HP MSSs have 64 bit CPUs however the EX47x series has 512 MB of RAM
and therefore will not support VAIL without replacing the single stick
of RAM with at least a 1 GB stick.

There is also the issue of performing an upgrade without the benefit of
a display. There are means to do it that are described here
http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/04/26/how-to-install-windows-home-server-vail-on-the-hp-mediasmart-server/

As other posters have commented, it is questionable if hardware
manufacturers will offer an upgrade path to VAIL from their existing
system that are sold with WHS V1. It is reasonable to expect that
Microsoft will offer VAIL as a system builder option at ~$100 and those
who want to upgrade their WHS V1 systems can use that path.
