When browsing artists, the "Various Artists" artist name isn't really an artist, and the albums within it may not be by an artist called "Various Artists" - it's a container name for all albums that are compilations, as defined by the SBS settings > My Music: "When compilation albums are grouped together, they appear under "Various Artists" by default. You can change that name below." i.e. if you change this setting to "Compilations", Browse Artists would contain an artist called "Compilations", and albums automatically receiving the Compilation tag by the scanner would have an album artist called "Compilations". Compilation albums can have any album artist name, and will be displayed/sorted under that name if you browse albums. As I've said a few times before (enhancement suggestion logged), it's a bit strange having a special Various Artists artist to display compilations within Browse Artists list. It would be better to have a Browse Compilations menu.
