The problem with Browse Albums is that it's been abused to try to make it do everything from this one place, and force the user to change settings to change the behaviour. eg. sort in different ways, often misconstrued as grouping (which it is not), and other settings such as whether to show artist names or band names in the presentation. I'd like to see more tailored Browse menus, so it is easy to flick between different displays quickly, but I already have that via Custom Browse, so I'm happy ;-) > There is no problem to implement this based on the current content in > the database but the database contents is a bit confusing because we > have three roles: > - Album Artist > - Artist > - Track Artist > > In my mind, it would be enough to have two roles in the database, > either "Album Artist" or "Track Artist" seems unnecessary to me. > I think Track Artists are used to denote artist roles on compilation albums, such that they can be excluded from the Browse Artists menu (there's a setting with a very poor label that allows the user to show all artists or hide artists that only appear on compilations). So there are contributor types for: Artists - where an album is a normal album, the artist would appear in the browse artist list. Album Artists - where an album has been given an album artist for the collection of songs, and should appear in the browse artist list. Track Artists - contributors on songs that are on a compilation album, which may be hidden from the browse artists list. The scanner already assigns an album artist for each album - for normal albums it doesn't add an album artist contributor role in the join table. > > - Artist role would indicate extra artists which contributes to the > album > This should not be seen as extra artists - artists should be the full set of artists that contribute to a song. i.e. the Album Artist may not actually contribute to each song on the album. > > Is there some reason for TRACKARTIST which I've missed that makes it > important to differ between ARTIST and TRACKARTIST ? > Track Artist roles are a right pain and I'd like to see them disappear. Providing that it is still possible to see a list of artists (that are album artists only), but clicking on an artist could show all albums that the user has involvement on (i.e. where the artist is an album artist or a track artist). -- Philip Meyer ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Philip Meyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=95 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84475 _______________________________________________ beta mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
