there was no direct indication to me at all that the service wasn't
installed.  i have never had this issue before.  i don't see how it
could have been user error, but i certainly acknowledge its possible,
or that the situation here is somehow unique.  i just don't think those
are the LIKELY answers...  i think its something on the slim side, be it
the build, code, or something else.  something went wrong, and i believe
its on slim.

i did nothing out of the ordinary, and nothing i haven't done for years
at this point.  the only "unusual" aspect of this, aside from the
problem itself, is that it wasn't readily apparent, but rather took me
a day or two to catch onto.
