As long as Logitech have the resources to do it I completely agree, but
if Logitech isn't willing to dedicate the amount of resources needed I'd
personally prefer that they focus on the core, make it stable and
extensible and let third parties provides the extras which aren't used
by the complete user base. The current situation where they have to
focus on everything but don't have the resources to do it, will just
result in overall slow progress. Logitech don't have the time to do
things and third parties don't have good API's the extend the software.
If they are resource constrained it's more important than ever to focus
the few resources they have on the right things, especially if there
are third parties that can do the stuff they don't have the time to do
yourself.

Good example of extras, would be things like MusicIP, Facebook, Flickr,
Information Browser and a lot of other things which aren't used by most
users.

I believe it's a lot easier to get third party developers involved by
making plugins than providing patches, the main reason being that the
number of developers that can provide a patch that fits the
design/architecture principles used are pretty few. In plugins this
isn't an issue, the developer is free to select the design in his/her
own plugin. Another issue is that some developers want to get credit
for their work and this really only happens if they make a third party
plugin. As an example, I suspect there are only a few people who knows
that you provided the patch for the biggest enhancement to the MusicIP
plugin during the last years while there are more people who knows that
you are the developer of Playlist Manager plugin.

The best solution would of course be that Logitech just added the
necessary resources, but that's a topic for another thread.
